Ian Jebbett has over 40 years experience in Medical and Industrial photography, working first at St James’s Hospital, Leeds, then as head of Photography at a Research Institute in the Thames Valley, UK. before finally moving to the Preseli Mountains of West Wales, where he runs Digital Photography courses from his studio.

In the days of darkrooms and films and chemicals, experimentation in the creation of his images was an important part of Ian’s image making process, but it was hit and miss and produced results which often couldn’t be repeated. However, when digital photography began to emerge and offer even greater creative possibilities without the health issues, there were no regrets about locking up the darkroom and using the computer.

Throughout his career, Ian’s had a deep fascination with creative image making - a reaction perhaps to the strict procedures followed during his working day. This led to him developing an unusual way of seeing and interpreting the world around him, along with a unique style of presentation, evident from his mysterious, often moody images.

Ian’s photographs have, from the earliest days, demonstrated his love of strong shapes and patterns, the importance of the way light influences tone and texture and mood, and how important it is that the essential elements of each image are emphasized to strengthen composition.

Often, it is difficult for a viewer to fully understand the meaning behind an image, but like most artists, Ian creates images for his own pleasure - each is a personal journey, and the reasons for that journey will not always be obvious to others at first glance.

Every photographic image Ian creates represents a unique moment in his life, a fraction of time when looking became seeing and an instant when his personal time was frozen. If an onlooker simply enjoys or even understands an image for whatever reason, then that is a genuine bonus.

Over the past 4 decades, Ian’s photographs have been exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries in the UK and abroad, and have won many awards. He has also produced a Limited Edition Fine Art book entitled “In the Shadow of the Bluestones” recording the locality where he lives and the people living there. 17 copies were given to local schools and libraries, one copy is in the archives of the V&A, London, and another is in the archives of the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.
